Finding the Correct Thickness For Your Trading Card Holder
With all the varieties of trading cards on the market now, finding the perfect holder for that new addition to your collection can sometimes be a bit confusing. Sports card manufacturers now produce a wide range of game used jersey and patch cards and the thickness of each card can vary a great deal.
When estimating the thickness of your cards, one quick trick is to stack up some regular common base cards. You'll want to use some plain cardboard commons for this trick, your basic Topps cards will work just fine. These cards are made with a standard thickness card stock normally 20pt. Basically, the 20pt is .020 inches in thickness.
Now take your thick jersey patch piece, and stack up some commons next to it. Continue to stack until you get as close as you can in thickness to your jersey card. Count up the commons and multiply by 20. If your jersey card is four common cards thick, then its roughly 80pt in thickness. If its six commons, thick then its roughly 120pt in thickness.
Most thick card holders state the maximum thickness of cards that they will hold. So now just look for the size holder that most closely matches your measurements. If you are unable to find the exact size, you'll want to go with the slightly larger holder, rather than one that is a bit too small.
